If you're wondering about refinishing the AK's wood...

Here you go...this is what it can look like

The gloss is a bit out of place on a battle rifle, but this is just beautiful and love the results, it's sure to grab some comments.

This was way easy to do just takes time and patience as things dry. This is my WASR 10, the furniture had virtually no finish on it that I could tell, maybe just the remnants of the cosmolene or some other oil, it was bare but it wasn't finished either.
Once i had her completely disassembled, the three pieces all got sprayed with a chemical stripped and wiped down, then repeated. I didn't see any finish come off. After that the stock had some nicks and dings that needed some light sanding with 150grit and two spots got some filler that had been gouged it looked like.
More sanding with 220, then 320 and the pieces were ready to have the finish applied. I selected the product in the pic below for the 2in1 feature of stain and poly, applied with a 1" foam disposable brush.
The product fully dries in 8 hours or more, It's dry to handle but still has some tackiness to it after about 2hrs. It won't be dry to sand for about 8hrs (it was overnight for me...). At that point all pieces got another treatment with the 320 and then more finish. After one hour, I applied a second coat. These two dried much faster and were handling dry in about 4hrs.

I'm guessing it feels better now too. That looks awesome!

those do look pretty darn good. The bare wood was one thing I didn't like about the AKs I looked at. However after seeing some finished at the gun show yesterday I might change my mind on that. Yours is better than the ones I saw too.

Do you have experience refinishing wood? I plan on buying a WASR 10, and the way your wood looks is EXACTLY what I am hoping mine to look like.
Is this something a beginner could do?

a little sanding, a little stain (if desired) and some clear cot. not hard at all. The sanding to get it smooth. The ones I held were pretty rough.

Get the stain from your favorite home improvement store. Same with the clear coat, like the minwax shown.

That is nice. It's never a bad thing to make any gun look nice, battle rifle or not.

If you can paint something, you can do this. Don't fear trial and error, you're sure to mess up if you've not done it before, keep some stripper on hand and start over if you think you've messed up. Patience is key, sand but don't over do it with too heavy of a grit (220 should be MORE than enough), key is you can't put wood back in it that you sanded off
The application of the product was simple, too, brush it on in an even lite coat, watch for runs and hang it up to dry while checking for runs. Use a rag or tissue to get any extra product from the sling mount or around the tang that goes into the receiver. Extra goop tends to hit those areas and as soon as you hang it up, gravity does its job and you have a run in your finish. But that can be sanded out.
