Thinking of Picking up a WASR now that the prices are starting to drop. After seeing this I have come to the conclusion that I will happen and it will get a nice red shade put on it.

That thing looks beautiful.

That is nice, great job...

I use a different method though, I run the wood through a hot cycle in the dishwasher with all the holes plugged and then heat dried. It take off all of the finish, and the cosmo to boot if your AK/SKS has any.

Refinish with 50/50 tung oil and boiled linseed oil, 8-10 even 12 coats applied every 6-8 hours. You could poly it if you want.

Absolutely, and you don't even have to get as involved as he did. The easiest way would be to first wipe on a clear stain (natural) or colored if you desire. Wipe it on heavy, but make sure it stays even. When that drys (1 hr. or so,) lightly sand it to remove any bumps or gritty feel, then you can spray (several light coats) polyurethane or varnish. Varnish would be best for durability, and has a nice amber tint to it. If you want it to be REALLY easy and don't mind a longer dry time, I'd say go with the varnish, but instead of spray, dunk it or pour straight from the can onto the wood, then hang it to dry. This gives an even, heavy finish that will likely last forever.

Not necessarily. I've finished and re-finished lots of stuff, and never used a chemical stripper. Sand carefully and it'll come right off. Just don't rush anything and you'll be fine.

I like it, it looks very natural to me.

All AK furniture should come like that. Properly varnished wood not only looks nice, but it also protects the furniture from the elements.

Plastic furniture will better for when the SHTF, but I'll take wood any day of the week over plastic. It just looks way better, especially if it is finished like that.
